Overcoming the Mental Roadblocks While on Your Health and Fitness Journey

When on a health and fitness journey the mental roadblocks often become the hardest battle you have to fight. Physically your body is capable of doing so many things, but overcoming these mental roadblocks can sometimes be the downfall. So today, I’m going to share some simple tips that can help keep you in a positive mindset while working towards your goals and help you push through the mental roadblocks when they come up.

My favourite tip to help you push through the roadblocks is to set small weekly or even daily goals. We talk about this a lot but setting small weekly goal allows you to build confidence in your routine. This is still true but it will also allow you to look back at how far you’ve come when you get hit with a mental roadblock. Being able to see progress when you look back may be the motivation you need to push through those days when you just aren’t interested in sticking to those routines.

Another tip to work with the mental roadblocks is the use of affirmations. Positive affirmations can help to reduce negative thoughts, increase confidence levels, increase levels of productivity and happiness. If you are going to start using affirmations to keep you accountable and moving forward on your health and fitness journey you want to ensure that the affirmations you are choosing are healthy and appropriate for you. I’ve included so affirmations below that you can use as a starting point but remember to adjust them so that they work for you.

  • I am worthy of good health
  • I fully accept where I am and am ready to seize this opportunity to grow
  • I create good health by talking about and thinking about my wellness
  • I am a friend to my body. I forgive my body and treat it with the same loving kindness I would like to receive
  • I choose thoughts that create a healthy atmosphere within and around me
  • I am a willing participant in my own wellness plan

Try starting with 5 minutes. Maybe it’s 5 minutes of exercise, maybe it’s spending 5 minute chopping vegetables, maybe it’s 5 minutes of decluttering a space in your home. Set a timer and commit to 5 minutes of whatever the task your struggling with is. Often even when we are struggling, if we can just do a little bit we will feel better. Sometimes if you can commit to 5 minutes you will get started and will probably continue, and sometimes your 5 minute timer will go off and your tapped out and that’s completely okay too.

My final tip…give yourself grace. Although I would always support someone who is trying to push through the mental roadblocks, sometimes we need just a minute to step back. And there is nothing wrong with that. Sometimes giving ourselves an opportunity to step back when our body is telling us that it needs that is the best thing we can do. Giving yourself an opportunity to take that breather may be exactly what you need to come back stronger on the other side…so if it’s what you need take it!

At the end of the day the mental roadblocks can be some of the hardest things to overcome on your health and fitness journey. There are going to be days when these tips will help get you through and there will be days when they won’t and that’s okay. Sometimes it’s important to recognize when our bodies just need to take what it’s telling us it needs.

  1. The five-minute trick really does work wonders. We often underestimate our mind’s desire to stay inert, and by committing to the not-so-hard act of working for five minutes, we learn that the hardest part is just the starting. Nice post. Thanks for sharing!
