When Was the Last Time You Checked in on Your Own Mental Health? 5 Questions To Ask Yourself

We all struggle with out mental health from time to time so making it a habit to check in on your mental health can be a great practice.

It’s important to learn about your stress triggers and know yourself well in order to be able to identify moments when you mental health is thriving and when it maybe isn’t. Stress can present itself in a lot of different ways so asking yourself some questions can really help you get to know your tendencies and hopefully allow you to take some time when you need it.

How are you feeling today?  Physically?  Mentally?

This seems like a relatively simple question but I want you to really think about this one long and hard. We have a tendency when people ask us how we are doing to just say “good” and move on with our days…but if you ask yourself how you are feeling try and dig deeper than “good”. Do you feel tension in your muscles? Do you have a headache? Are you experiencing GI distress? Are you feeling energized or down? Are you feeling happy or sad? Think about how you are truly feeling and this will help you identify some of your common stress symptoms.

What’s taking up most of your headspace right now?

What are you thinking the most about right now? What’s going on in your head? Are you focusing on stressful events or are you focusing more on things that fill your cup. Obviously you have to put mental effort into stressful things at times but ideally you want to be able to focus on things that fill your cup as well and make you feel good.

What did you do that made you feel good today?

Expressing gratitude is a great way to get into a more positive mental health space. Check in with yourself and find something you are grateful for each and every day. It doesn’t need to be big and complicated…the little things are a great way to express gratitude.

What’s something you can do today that would be good for you?

Find something each day that you can do that fills your cup. This may be something that takes an hour (like a workout) or it may be something that takes a few minutes (like washing your face). Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated, but finding something each day that makes you feel good is definitely a positive way to check in on and maintain your mental health.

How have you been sleeping?

Sleep is a very important component of positive mental health and it’s often one that’s overlooked. Check in and see how much sleep you are getting regularly as well as the quality of your sleep. Remember, that 7-9 hours of sleep is only half of the deal…you also want to be striving for quality sleep as well!

So have you checked in with your mental health? There are many other ways and questions you can ask yourself but these few are a great start. Try this check in weekly or even daily if you are going through a more stressful time to help make adjustments to improve your mental health.
