Motivation…it’s a word that haunts most people’s health and fitness goals. Most people who are striving to improve their health and fitness know they should improve their nutrition habits, or they should become more active but finding the motivation to do it can be daunting. On the flip side of this, many people who are in a routine start to get bored with that routine and then fall off the bandwagon because they aren’t motivated to continue doing things the way they have been so today…I’m giving you three tips for getting your motivation back on track when you are starting or continuing on a health and fitness journey.
Given the current COVID-19 pandemic keeping motivated has been one of the hardest things for so many people. Today I’m going to share 3 tips with you, but I want to say this first…if you aren’t feeling motivated on your health and fitness journey right now give yourself grace. I don’t want you to completely give up on your health and fitness journey because it has so many physical and mental health benefits, however with gyms closed, less frequent trips to the grocery store and all the other limitations we are facing with the COVID-19 pandemic our health and fitness journeys may look different right now and I want you to give yourself permission to be okay with that. Know that it’s okay if your motivation is waning and you feel frustrated…give yourself permission to feel those feelings and then get back on track in the best way you can given the situation you are in.

Now to the tips…if you are anything like me you get bored with your fitness routine very easily. I’m constantly trying to change things up and keep things interesting because it helps keep me motivated to keep going and stick to a fitness journey. So here are my three top tips…
Tip 1: Try Something New
When you are getting bored with your current fitness routine trying something new can be the quickest and easiest way to kick your motivation up a notch. Get online and look up different kinds of workouts that you could try…while everything may not be appropriate for everyone, there is likely something out there that you haven’t tried. Take a dance class, create a park workout for yourself, go for a bike ride, take your kids to the park and just run with them, try a new sport, the list goes on and on. Keep in mind that a lot of these things can be done from the comfort of your own home and if you’re investing in a new piece of equipment try ordering it right to your home if you are able. Can’t order new equipment, get creative with what you already have at home. Looking for weights…check your cupboards, grab a backpack and load it up with books. Try creating an obstacle course with things from your kids playroom. Need a ball to shoot hoops…try creating a small scale net and use paper balls. There are so many different options that you likely already have around your home, you just may need to use them in a new way. Get creative and try something new today!

Tip 2: Reach Out to a Coach
Reaching out to a coach can be helpful for many reasons. Reaching out to a coach doesn’t mean that you have to pay lots of money for multiple sessions and sign into a long term contract. Simply try asking them for some ideas on how you could vary up your current routine. They may be able to give you some new exercises or different activity ideas without you having to sign into a long-term contract. Or you may be looking for just that. Coaches can be great accountability partners. Coaches offers all kinds of different offers and programs and you can likely find something that will fit your needs and your budget. Having a coach checking in with you even if you are still training on your own can help kick that motivation into gear and keep you track for your health and fitness goals. If you are looking for a coach feel free to reach out and I would love to help develop a program that works for you if what I have doesn’t fit your current needs!
Tip 3: Enlist Friends
Having a group of friends can also be an incredibly motivating thing. These groups help keep you accountable to your goals and can help bring some fire back into your fitness routine. Perhaps you have people in your group training in different ways and you can try some of their training opportunities and they can try yours. You don’t need to train together in person or even virtually…a group chat can even be beneficial just to check in with each other. When you are struggling with fitness motivation accountability groups (friends or coaches) can be one of the biggest and most important things to help keep you on track throughout the journey.
